History of Walk & Roll
The San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) encourages bicycling, walking, car/vanpooling, and using transit. Walking and bicycling are clean, healthy and fun ways to travel and exercise.
Welcome to the Walk & Roll Home Page. Here you will find information on the MPO's Walk & Roll Rally celebrated each May during National Bike Month. You will also find information on the Walk & Roll Individual and Corporate Challenges that occur during the months of September and October.
2013 Walk & Roll Rally and Celebrating National Bike Month (May)
Each year, May is identified as National Bike Month. Celebrating National Bike Month is a great way to highlight how bicycling in San Antonio and the region is growing by leaps and bounds. A recent MPO study showed that thousands of cyclists are on the roadways each month. On-street bike lane mileage has grown from 34 miles in 2000 to over 200 miles in 2010 and another potential 350 miles has been identified for the future. Additionally, over 40 miles of off-road hike and bike trails have been or are planned to be built along the Leon and Salado Creeks and the Medina River. Cycling in San Antonio is on a roll! With the increased cyclists in the region comes the need for increased education on cyclists and motorists sharing the road. What better way to focus on education than to identify an entire month specifically to talk about the benefits of including cycling into the transportation system?
For National Bike Month 2013, the MPO will again focus on highlighting exciting bicycling events in our region including the MPO's 17th Annual Walk & Roll Rally at Main Plaza on May 3rd. If you are a business, you can participate and help spread the word about National Bike Month in 2013 by offering one or more cycling customer incentives appropriate to your business during May. Any incentives you offer, whether for a day, week or all month, will be publicized though this website and throughout the cycling community.
It is never too early to start planning for another successful National Bike Month and Walk & Roll to Work Rally! Please call Lydia Kelly at 210-230-6911 or e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss how you can participate in our National Bike Month campaign.
Working together we can make the region a world-class bicycle-friendly community.
2012 September/October Corporate and Individual Challenges:
The Walk and Roll Challenge, to be conducted by AACOG from September through October 2012, is a friendly competition among businesses and other organizations that is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and air pollution, while providing health and economic benefits. It is set during the time of year when the San Antonio area historically experiences elevated air pollution concentrations.
In this challenge, employees of various organizations record (on NuRide.com) the trips they have traveled through means other than as single occupants of motorized vehicles, such as through biking, walking, busing, or carpooling. In the end, all organizations are recognized for participating, and those whose employees record the most such trips divided by the number of employees in the organization win awards. Regardless of whether their employer participates, individuals recording their trips on NuRide.com during the challenge timeframe not only earn the usual NuRide points that they can redeem for over 90 discounted or free goods and services from area businesses (such as HEB, Quiznos, or The Cove), but they may also win 1 or more of 8 weekly drawing prizes of $50, or a grand prize of $200.
Please let your Boss/Public Relations Department/CEO/President know about the Walk & Roll Challenge, and, if they are not already involved, please encourage them to officially participate.
Participating, for employers, is simply a matter of letting AACOG know they're on board, designating one or two "officers" whose role will be to encourage and assist co-workers to participate, and allowing those officers to attend the Walk & Roll Officer Rally on July 31, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in AACOG's Boardroom at 8700 Tesoro Drive, San Antonio, TX 78217, where they will learn more details of the challenge and receive materials that could be used in encouraging co-workers to become involved.
For more information, to let AACOG know your organization is accepting the challenge, and/or to RSVP for the officer rally, please contact Annette Prosterman at (210) 362-5213 or email email@example.com. More information can also be found by visiting http://www.aacog.com/index.aspx?NID=349
*Organizations that have regularly participated in the Walk&Roll Challenge are: AACOG, Bexar County, the City of San Antonio, CPS Energy, Lake|Flato Architects, the MPO, SAWS, Southwest Research Institute, VIA Metropolitan Transit, and USAA.
